SYRACUSE — Matt Carpenter, the head coach of the Wawasee women’s varsity basketball team for the past six seasons, announced his resignation effective immediately Tuesday, the school announced in a news release.
“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to lead the Lady Warriors over the past six seasons. I appreciate all the support the school and community have given me and the program during this time. After 16 years of coaching high school basketball, I need to step back and take a break,” Carpenter said in the statement.
Carpenter will remain at Wawasee as a math teacher as well as a seasonal assistant athletic director in the spring.
“Coach Carpenter’s commitment to the Wawasee Athletic Department has been significant,” said Wawasee Athletic Director Brent Doty. “The impact he has had on our youth program and at the high school level will continue in the future. Most importantly, the life lessons he imparted on his teams will continue to impact the lives of our student-athletes.
Wawasee will immediately begin looking for a new women’s basketball head coach.
