Reference to ‘old whites’ in BC South Asian newspaper article sparks complaint – Keremeos Review

A British Columbia group called Keep the RCMP in Surrey says it is filing a formal complaint with the National News Media Council against the Indo-Canadian VOICE newspaper for an opinion piece it published on June 14, 2022 referring to a “shameful and rowdy protest” by “a bunch of old white people”.

“Absolutely, we will file a formal complaint,” said Paul Daynes, a KTRIS spokesperson. “What it does is it makes a derogatory reference to an identifiable group within our community which we think is totally inappropriate and wrong and if applied to any other community group they would have grounds equal to feel equally outraged.”

The article appeared under the title “MOI PENSE! The CBC report on McCallum’s feet not being visible in the video footage is very interesting.

The NNC is a Toronto-based media watchdog made up of 15 directors and was established in 2015 to “promote ethical practices within the news media industry”. It is an amalgamation of former press councils from British Columbia, Atlantic Canada, Manitoba and Ontario.

The sentence in the Voice The article of particular concern to the campaign reads: “The outrageous and outrageous protest at Surrey City Council recently by a group of white elderly people supporting the RCMP clearly shows how low this group can stoop and how he is desesperate.”

Rattan Mall, publisher of the VOICEsaid he wrote the opinion piece.

“I’m just stating facts, that’s what the video showed. If it was brown people, I would have written brown people. I don’t hesitate to write anything. I mean, when South Asians commit crimes, I’m the first to say, “South Asian caught,” Mall said.

“I have no qualms identifying them as South Asian or Vietnamese or white or whatever,” he added. “If it was brown people, I would have written this. I don’t hesitate to take on South Asians when they misbehave or act like idiots.

“I mean, if they’re white, they’re white, if they’re brown, they’re brown.”
