Odisha CM announces Social Security yojana for newsagents


Bhubaneswar: Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday announced a social security plan (yojana) for the state’s newspaper hawkers. It includes Rs 2 lakh free of charge in the event of death due to an accident. The I&PR department will examine these hawkers and prepare a database to issue ID cards to each of them.

Newspaper hawkers play an essential role in the flow of information. They worked in different weather conditions and worked early in the morning. Given their role as a link between people and current affairs, Odisha CM announced the social security plan for them.

According to this yojana, hawkers registered with the unorganized Odisha Social Security Council will be included in the plan. According to this yojana, the next of kin of a newspaper peddler will receive Rs. 2 lakh gratis for death due to accident and Rs 1 lakh for death due to natural causes. Likewise for permanent disability an amount of Rs. 1.5 lakh financial assistance will be provided and for the loss of both limbs Rs 80,000 will be provided while for the loss of one limb Rs. 40,000 financial aid to be provided.

As hawkers faced the financial crisis due to Covid, registered newspaper hawkers will receive Rs. 3,000 in two installments. Financial assistance will be provided by the CM relief fund.

In addition, as they encounter problems in working, appropriate workshops will be provided at the sub-division and district level.

In this regard, the Department of Information and Public Relations will create a database to examine hawkers and issue identity cards, the CM has issued a directive in this regard.
