newsawards relaunched as Newspaper Awards to focus solely on print

A national awards program that recognizes excellence in news production and content has been relaunched to focus solely on print.

Newsawards organizers have announced that it is rebranding back to its former Newspaper Awards name, with a new focus on “production and innovation” in newspapers.

The program was originally renamed in 2015 and in recent years has also offered a number of awards recognizing work in the digital realm.

But, launching this year’s program, director Gary Cullum has now announced a change in direction.

Gary, pictured, said: ‘Newspaper printing is in decline, that’s an undeniable fact. However, the print newspaper remains essential to the success and profitability of the news media industry.

“Print newspapers will evolve for many years and continue to be published alongside their digital counterparts.

“The new Newspaper Awards format will focus on production and innovation in national, international, regional, weekly and hyperlocal newspapers.

“It will recognize the skills and expertise of all employees involved in the production of the print publication.”

He added: “The decision to focus solely on print may seem counter-intuitive, but our research indicates that the industry is keen to emphasize innovation and excellence in the print newspaper.

“We look forward to showcasing world-class newspapers in print nationally, regionally and internationally at what promises to be a premier industry networking event.”

The Newspaper Awards 2023 entry form will be available in September with a closing date in December.

The Awards will take place on Tuesday March 28, 2023 at the London Hilton Bankside.

Sponsors include Fujifilm, UPM, Papermule, Reach Printing Services, Resolute Forest Products, Newsprinters and Aktrion Atalian Servest.
