LAKKI MARWAT: The presidents of the village and neighborhood councils have threatened to protest if the provincial government does not transfer powers to the local level with immediate effect.

Speaking at a press conference at Bannu Press Club on Monday, Malik Mir Mohammad Hayat, Mureed Hayat Advocate, Mian Mehfozur Rehman, Shah Zeb Khan and others regretted that the government did not transfer powers to them despite the fact that the first phase of local body elections took place four months ago.

They lamented that the newly elected presidents have not yet taken office.

They pointed out that in previous local governments, nazims in village and neighborhood councils were empowered to use recovery funds in their respective constituencies.

They said that since a huge part of the funds had not been spent by previous local governments, they had the legitimate right to use them for the good of the people.

They feared that the government would use the recovery funds at the whim of the deputies or the district administration. They asked the government to financially empower the presidents of the village and neighborhood councils to use these funds.

TWO ARREST: Police said on Monday they had solved a case of indiscriminate murder of a couple by arresting two suspected killers during a raid in the town of Naurang.

On Tuesday evening, unidentified gunmen had killed Faridullah, 35, and his wife, Shazia Bibi, and injured their son, Sufyan, 11, after entering their home in the village of Nar Sultan Mehmood.

Shaheed Asmatullah Khan Khattak Police Station SHO Javed Khan told reporters that during the investigation, police learned that the couple had migrated to the village from Lahore a few months ago. He said investigators found a clue to the killers and arrested them in a surprise raid.

He identified the arrested men as Hidayatullah, a professional killer, and Shahidullah, a brother of the late Faridullah. He said that Naveed Khan, who had registered a double murder case, and his brother Shahidullah had hired professional killers for Rs 300,000 to murder their brother, wife and son.

He said efforts were underway to arrest Naveed.
