Thoubal, June 15: Residents of Heirok staged a demonstration to protest the delay in completing an RCC bridge being built in Heirok Chingdompok here today.
Reportedly, the construction work of the RCC Bridge started in 2016 to connect Heirok Part-II and Heirok Part-III as the previous bridge broke during the 2015 flood.
Speaking to the media, YDC, Heirok Part-III Secretary Litan Wangma, Devbarta Sharma said that they (the people of Heirok) have repeatedly requested the relevant authority to complete the project, but that their request seems to have fallen on deaf ears.
Affirming that the concerned authorities have not set any tentative time to complete the project till date, he called on the concerned contractor to complete the construction works of the bridge at the earliest.
Devbarta further said that the bridge is the lifeline for the residents of Heirok, Wabaching, Thamlai, Heinoukhong, Konaitong, Paringtong, Thabi Keithel, Khoibu and Machi.
Saying that the construction delay has inconvenienced a lot of people, he said that the wooden bridge which is installed as a diversion cannot guarantee safety.
He claimed that two people were injured while crossing the wooden bridge.
Continuing that the people of Heirok closed the wooden bridge to avoid accidents, Devbarta urged Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Heirok AC MLA Th Radheshyam to look into the matter and address the grievances of the people.
Devbarta said Heirok residents will initiate different modes of unrest if the contractor and relevant officials do not give a positive response within two days.
