Dar Al Sharq to mark 50 years of Al Arab newspaper

Doha: Under the patronage and presence of the Chairman of Qatar Media Corporation (QMC), HE Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al Thani, the Dar Al Sharq Group today celebrates the 50th anniversary of Al Arab Newspaper, Qatar’s leading daily newspaper.

A ceremony to mark the occasion will be held at Jawaher Hall, Ezdan Palace Hotel, with the participation of a number of heads of government institutions and eminent personalities.

A number of media personalities and journalists who have influenced local media, former ministers of culture and information and former editors of the newspaper since its inception in 1972 will be honored at the ceremony.

The ceremony will also see the screening of a documentary film on the Al Arab newspaper, describing his journey and his role in promoting the work of the media in Qatar.

Al Arab was established in 1972 as the first political daily in Qatar by Dar Al-Uruba for press, printing, publishing and distribution.

It was founded by Abdullah Hussein Al Naama, who was also the daily’s first editor.

Al Arab began publishing daily with six pages, fed by correspondents in Cairo, Amman and Algeria, and continued to publish until 1996, when its last issue was number 7096, on January 2, and contained 22 pages.

The newspaper took over publication on November 18, 2007 from Dar Al Arab for editing and distribution.

In September 2020, Dar Al Sharq Group acquired Dar Al Arab for publishing, printing and distribution, and took over publication of the newspaper under the Dar Al Sharq umbrella with its sister newspapers, Al Sharq, The Peninsula and Lusail.
