PESHAWAR: Security forces killed a suspected terrorist in an intelligence-based operation in the Mirali region of North Waziristan, an official statement said on Monday.
An intense firefight took place between the troops and the terrorists in which one terrorist was killed, the army’s media arm, Inter-services Public Relations (ISPR), said. Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the slain terrorist. The statement did not bear the name of the terrorist killed in the encounter.
The terrorist remained actively involved in terrorist activities against security forces and the killing of innocent citizens, he added. He was also involved in the targeted killing of Qari Sami in the North Waziristan district.
Residents appreciated the operation and expressed their full support to eliminate the threat of terrorism from the region. Qari Sami, a local Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl) leader, was killed along with his friend last month. Residents had staged a sit-in protest against the murder of the JUI-F leader.
All roads in the district were blocked and people boycotted official functions and stopped going to offices to protest against the deadly attack. The protest was postponed for two weeks after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sent a committee made up of leaders from different political parties for talks with the protesters.
